MiCrédito is partnering with Kiva to provide loans to build bathrooms in communities lacking proper sanitation facilities.
This is part of a government-led initiative coordinated by Nuevo FISE (Fund for Energetic Social Inclusion) to improve access to sanitation for families throughout Nicaragua. The project is currently working in two areas of Nicaragua - in the municipalities of Catrina, Niquinohorno, and San Juan de Oriente in the department of Masaya as well as Condega, San Juan de Lima, and the northern section of the city of Esteli in the department of Esteli.
The project represents an alliance between the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Local development committee members conduct visits to the local communities to identify families lacking sanitation facilities. The families who wish to build bathrooms can apply for MiCrédito loans to support the purchase of supplies and labour for bathroom construction. Local technical committees include architects and contractors who provide technical support including bathroom designs.
